You can add meringue (sp?) powder to the Dream Whip and let it sit for a few minutes and that will help you be able to use it for decorating. You can also add clear gel icing and that will help it set up also.

I think the Dream Whip icing has to be refrigerated, doesn't it? It is also very light and fluffy in texture, which can be very good and looks beautiful on the cake, but is not useful for decorating.

Try Dream Whip. You can buy it @ the grocery store on the baking aisle. It will be like the kind that Super K put on their cakes. It is alot like cool whip, but since it is a dry mix, it has longer shelf life. It isn't the crisco icing that most deli's use.

The Wilton recipe calls for half butter and half shortening, but if you want a truly white icing like you find in the stores, use only shortening and no butter. You can make it easily by using a butter frosting recipe and substituting shortening for the butter/margarine. The main reason for using the Wilton recipe is that it clearly tells a beginner how to thin the recipe for decorating a cake, which can be a big help. If you want to color your icing, be sure to find some paste coloring and try not to use the liquid drops. Your color will be much nicer with the paste.

MY MOM AND I BAKE CAKES AND THE BEST ICING IS THE BUTTER CREAM ICING AND YOU CAN GET RECIPE OUT OF A CAN OF MARAINGE POWER( DON'T KNOW HOW TO SPELL IT) GO TO WALMART IN THE CRAFT SECTION IN THE BACK WHERE THE CAKE AND WEDDING CAKE STUFF IS AND YOU CAN BUY A CAN AND IT HAS THE RECIPE UNDER THE LID. HOPE THAT HELPS. IT IS REALLY GOOD.

The whipped icing is just plain whipped topping, like cool whip. It's wonderful on a cake (esp a german chocolate cake). The regular icing has sugar and crisco in it.
