I made some cooked cabbage today that was simple and good. Frying pan - add butter 1/2 peeled & sliced apple slice up cabbage (shredded) salt, pepper, powdered garlic small amount of water cover & cook until tender (stir when needed)

this has been in my family for many generations. cut up cabbage, put in cast iron skillet with bacon grease, salt, pepper,small amount of red pepper-crushed not the powder, add enough water to barely cover the top of the cabbage. A MUST IS DO NOT STIR, cover and cook for about 5- minutes-do n ot over cook-if you stir it-it will turn a dark color. taste- it is wonderful

I always use bacon grease and a couple of pinches of sugar. But think I will try the crock pot receipe at least once. thanks and i'm not the op.

Cut your cabbage up into medium sized shredds then place the pieces in an ice bath with lots of ice and salt. This will make the cabbage crisp up. Leave it in the ice for atleast 30 minutes but you can do it longer if you have time. Next just shake off the cabbage and put it in a large pot with a little vegetable oil and salt (you won't need to add water as you cook the cabbage it will make enough water of it's own not to burn). A whole cabbage usually takes 15 minutes on medium high (atleast) to cook. I like my cabbage kind of steamed like this instead of boiled. The longer you cook it the less green it will look, just keep checking on it. I like mine tender but not mushy at all

My mom made a casserole with cabbage in it tonight. It was really good. I will check for the recipe, but I think this is how it was cooked...
1/2 to whole head of cabbage chopped. (enough to cover bottom of small casserole dish) 1/2 cup butter melted 1/4 cup mayonaise 1 egg can cream celery soup one sleeve ritz cracker 1/4 cup butter melted 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese.
Chop cabbage, place in casserole dish. pour melted butter on cabbage mix soup, mayo and egg. pour over cabbage. crush crackers and mix with butter and cheese. pour over cabbage. Bake 350 for 30 minutes.

This is the way I prepare cabbage at our house. We all love it....even my 17 year old son!
Large cabbage head....cut into small chunks Pack it fairly snug in crock pot
Pour in 2 cans of chicken broth Add some garlic and onion (I use dried flakes sometimes) Pour approximately 1/4 cup oil (I use olive oil)
Let it cook all day. Fix some Martha White Sweet Yellow cornbread mix muffins and ENJOY!

Hot and Spicy Cabbage 1 teaspoon Vegetable Oil or Canola Oil 2 ounces smoked ham, chopped 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper 1/2 cup chopped onion 1 (10 oz.) can can tomatoes with green chilies, undrained and chopped 1/2 teaspoon sugar 4 cups sliced cabbage 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 1/8 teaspoon hot pepper sauce HEAT oil in large skillet over medium heat. Add ham, green pepper and onion. Cook and stir until vegetables are crisp-tender. ADD tomatoes and sugar. Simmer 3 minutes. ADD cabbage, black pepper and hot pepper sauce. Simmer 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve. Fried Cabbage Put some bacon grease in a frying pan. (If you have a cast iron one, use it.) Chop up cabbage like slaw and cook it in the frying pan with salt, sugar and pepper to your taste. Fry until it's done as you like it. Stir it often because it tends to get a "little too brown" if you don't. Old German Cabbage Rolls 1-1/2 lbs hamburger 1/2 lb sausage 1 medium onion (diced fine) 1 cup rice 1 button of garlic 1-1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp pepper 1 large head of cabbage 1 to 1-1/2 cups vinegar 2 rounded Tbsp. Crisco Cook rice according to directions on box. Pour off excess water and cool. Mix together hamburger, sausage, onion, garlic, salt, pepper and rice. Put enough water in big kettle to steam cabbage leaves. Cook cabbage for a few minutes then take them out of the water. Put Crisco in the water. Cool the cabbage leaves and put the hamburger filling in each leave. Make into a roll and use toothpicks to keep the rolls together. Put cabbage rolls in the cabbage/Crisco water. Add enough water to almost cover the rolls. Put lid on kettle and cook at least 1 hour. Add vinegar and cook another 1/2 hour with cover on the kettle.

You can just put it in a pot of water with a little bit of butter with your red pepper flakes and salt/pepper and just let it boil until it is tender, very yummy!

frankly it is better if you don't boil it....I take mine and cut in quarters then slice it about 1/2 inch thick....get a non stick pan or a good seasoned iron skillet...put some bacon grease, olive oil or regular cooking oil just enough to coat the bottom of the pan...medium high heat and sort of stir fry the cabbage...when it is about half done...put in about a cup of water...throw the lid on it and let it continue cooking until your desired tenderness...I don't like my cabbage mushy as a matter of fact I leave mine what you would call crisp tender...I use salt pepper garlic and onion and sometimes about two good pinches of sugar...cabbage is one of those good ole fashion staple foods...you can put just about anything in it. good luck

what are some ways to boil cabbage i think my grandfather used to put red pepper in it, i need some advice on how to boil it im not sure what to do!
