When your last coat is good and dry, go over it with Johnson's Paste Wax.

How did you apply your 1st coat of Poly? Did you thin it? How long has it been on the project. All of these questions will dictate how you apply additional coats. I am not a fan of steel wool as you are likely to leave tiny bits of steel behind that will later rust and discolor the finish. I prefer to use 320 grit to sand the raised grain if a thin coat of poly has been applied. Too vigorous sanding may lead to cutting through the stain.

Be sure that is 4 ought steel wool. That 4 0000 grade. Then wipe, and apply finish again. You can do this until it shines like you want it.

A product called Sand and Seal. Sand after first coat, apply second coat, sand again, then the final coat which will "seal".

I have recently built a gun cabinet. I have stained it and put a clear polyurethane finish on it. What is the best thing to go over it with to really smooth the finish out?
