An average family of four uses 400 gallons of water per day or 100 gallons per person. I guess a 50 GPD water softener would be better than nothing. I put epsom salts in my bath water sometimes when I want to get extra sudsy. I doubt the effectiveness of the UV lamp in the filter technology due to small amount of time the microbes would spend in the radiation with the water running.

no testing ...red/orange in the tank is iron ...you can run a glass of mine out that isn't filtered and it turns cloudy orange in just a few minutes.
the white on the shower head is lime.
i use a salt in the water conditioner that removes iron(green bag) that's why its $6.00 a bag the regular salt is only $5.00. i think mine would be fine to drink(no smell or funky taste),i'm just use to buying and drinking water by the gallon now. the emptys come in handy if the well goes out for a while.

That's sounding a little like my house, Satan. The water doesn't smell (I don't think), but even with a sediment filter I see a lot of red built up in the toilet tank, and white on the shower head.

I spend about $30 a month on bottled water, which is why I'm even starting this project. I realized that if I could clean the water at the source then everything would be cleaner and safer, and in a year or so I'd be saving money.

OITF, where do you have your water tested, and how much does it cost?

my water stinks and is very iron/rust and lime rich and the pump picks up a little dirt. i run it through a whole house sediment filter buy foam cartridges online in bulk for less than $1.00 each then through a water softener ($400.00 + installation if you aren't handy)its fine for cooking, washing clothes, bathing and probably drinking it doesn't stink after running through the water softner
(i buy drinking water because...just in case) i use a 40lb bag of salt a month or less @ $6.00ish each

I use a Rain Soft system for my well water. Sort of a scam at times, but having your water tested, then finding the correct filter media, softener and the like was very helpful, clothes are cleaner, no more lime scale on the fixtures.

Lots of other options for whole house systems, test your water first to be sure you are attacking the issue which is causing the problem.

After doing some research, it looks like the "best" thing is around $1400. That's for a sediment filter, then a reverse osmosis system, then a purifier and UV light. Unfortunately, that's a bit out of my price range.

Have any of you had any experience with an under sink osmosis system, like this?

There's a similar one at Lowes that's around $90, but I couldn't find it online.

I hate the idea of having a second faucet, and really wanted it for the whole house and not just the kitchen sink, but at least I could afford this for now and save up for a whole house system.

I use these in two houses in Boone. No filters or cartridges to change.

Can you guys recommend a good whole house water filter for well water, to replace a cheap Whirlpool valve-in-head filter? Preferably one that's a fairly easy install, and less than $300.

The one I have is OK, but the filters really don't fit the system so a lot of unfiltered water gets through. And I hate replacing the filter every month. I'd rather pay a little more for a better system that's low (or no) maintenance.

I'm in Ashe, but I don't mind buying online or driving to Boone or Wilkes to buy it.
