I know it is more costly but use professionals. We had new windows put in by Window World did a wonderful job. Lifetime guarantee as long as I own the house and if I decided to sell the new owner could by the warranty for 50.00. One of the neighbors got individual to do their windows and they came to me after the fact and wanted to know about Window World and said they wished that they had got professionals. I didn't ask what the problem was.

another thing to consider is the installers.

before you commit to letting them do the job (and signing the contract)... make sure you ask for locations of other jobs they did and to give you reference numbers. then call them and ask for their review AND if you can come over for a few minutes and see the quality of their work.

i only say this because my home has newer siding. but when you get up close OMG did they cut corners. molding 30' off the ground not fitting. openings/gaps everywhere. COMPLETELY bad job.

i didn't do the upgrade, it was already on the house when i bought. but didn't see any of the massively bad job until i started fixing up the yard and house a year or two later :( :( :(. if i could, they'd be re-doing the entire house!!! good from 10' away is definitely not the same as good from 1 foot away!

I would use cement board siding if it was my house. You can google "cement board vs. vinyl siding" to find the pros and cons of both.

Thanks for the info. This should get me started on my questions and what I need to look for. I thought about the rigid foam before when I was thinking of siding. I also looked at some of the pre-insulated on line but some of that gets pricey quick.

Thanks again for the help.

Vinyl siding standards are covered by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard 3679. Any vinyl siding you buy should have this designation on product fact sheets and packaging. This is a minimum standard, however. To pick a product that exceeds the minimum standard, follow these guidelines:

Panels should be at least .040 in. thick; .042 to .045 is better. The ASTM standard requires only .035 in. Soffit panels should be about .05 in. thick. Because soffits are suspended horizontally and secured at the edges only, the extra thickness prevents panels from sagging. Look for antiweathering protection - sunlight is deadly to raw vinyl. While the actual ingredients designed to keep vinyl from fading and degrading are proprietary, a common one is titanium oxide. You can also get an idea of a product's durability by asking the dealer or contractor to explain why and how it will resist weathering. The warranty is another clue to how weather resistant a product is. Few building products come with the long warranties offered by vinyl manufacturers. Fifty years is standard. Some products even come with a lifetime warranty that can be transferred to the next owner of your home. However, some warranties are prorated: The longer the siding lasts, the less the company will pay. Make sure you read the fine print. Some manufacturers only promise to recoat rather than merely replace damaged siding. And most warranties just pay for the product - not the labor for installation. I am not sold on pre-insulated siding because of the gaps that would exist in the insulation. I would attach rigid foam to the house before installing the siding if it were me.

I'm thinking of getting vinyl siding put on my house. Does anyone have any reccomendations? I'm working on a budget and don't have a clue of what to get or ask for. I don't want the cheapest product and I also don't want the most expensive. What type of siding do I need to stay clear of and what do I need to look for? Thanks for any info.
