Singer's answer is correct. I have a degree in horticulture. Absolutely correct !

if you have plastic and mulch the weed roots will be easy to pull up. The wind carries the weeds seeds, and they have enough in the mulch to take root.

I even have some growth in plastic, and lava rock. The roots are stuck to a lava rock when I pull them out. A weed can grow through a small crack in concrete.

I am learning to see weeds as a beautiful, desirable gift from Mother Nature.LOL

tulips, daffodils, bulbs plants in general should not be cut until the leaves die on their own.

The get their food now from those leaves in order to have blooms next year. They look ugly for a time, but is necessary for next yrs. blooms.

I never did anything to mine and they would come back year after year. No sign of them this year though. I guess they finally got tired of being neglected.
