Maybe a butterfly bush? They prune well so the height shouldn't be an issue.

Can you guys recommend a tree that won't grow over 6' tall, isn't too wide, is sparse at the bottom, and grows well in full sun? I'm looking for something to go in the middle of a flower bed.

I was looking at some Japanese maples, but they all get too big. So I'm thinking I might have to go with a bush, but I don't want anything that's big at the bottom because that will overwhelm the bed and kill the flowers.
