Yes a fram and 10W-30 and put some stabil in it over the winter and crank it up and let it run for 15 mins. every month. The steering, transmission and deck will wear out twice before the engine does.

Mobil 1 motor oil full synthetic and Honda Filters. The filter media is about the same in all those filters.Lydall in Hamptonville NC used to manufacture the filter media for several of the manufactures.

Don't use a high tech oil filter on an air cooled engine it will cut down the oil flow and the engine parts will not get enough oil. A fram has the most flow.

You shouldn't run ethanol in small engines. Especially if they set for extended periods (like winter) without being used

Exactly. I only buy my mower/trimmer/chainsaw gas at one station that has no ethanol in their gas. If not, I use a conditoner/treatment in my gas.

Watch this and you be the judge on cheap oil filters.

And since gasoline has ethanol make sure the api rating on the oil is sn.

Last year on the classifieds here.... Had low hours and it's now time for a oil change.
Does it matter where I bought it?

Not unless its an actual John Deere mower from a Deere Dealership doe to the warranty work that the Dealership like to maintain. If its the LOWES or Home Depot type any Oil will work, but I perfer to use Castro Syntec in my Mowers.

If you run the John Deere Turf-Guard you'll pay the price. Also, if you run the OEM oil filter be prepared to pay for that as well. If you'll go to http://www.wixfilters.com or http://www.fram.com (frams's site lists other filter brand part #'s) you can do a cross reference and buy a filter from the auto parts store for much less.

I have a 2007 Cub Cadet and I use Quaker State 10W30 and a Motorcraft FL400S oil filter. Run it this way for six mowing seasons with no problem. My oil change for the mower came in under $10.

Look at the Walmark for oil and maybe filter. Some of the higher HP mowers use a red colored motor.
