just do some extra checking make sure around the house that shingles run off in the gutter and none are missing and check downspouts from roof do this because one maybe stopped up and not releaving water to go through pipes check from the room you built on to the house if not enough shingles water will weigh them down and will leak do this if still leaks may have to get someone light to get up their and make sure you have no weak spots if you do may need to tear up a spot over the room bigger an wider than the leak and see what is taken place .... if so make sure tar paper is put down and shingles are put down correctly if you will look at what is put down allready and follow that you will be fine just keep straight with down.... if you touch a piece of it and come loose and is brittle may need to replace all shingles hope I helped a little good luck and God Bless!!!

Thank you both. Jabberwocky I think I understand what you are saying. The water was coming in the window and going down in the sill and then running through the ceiling? We are going to do what ashe plumber said and what you said.

i had a 2 story house with a similar problem. i am only passing on what i learned

i had a bedroom window right in the area of where 2 roof lines came together. i had that spot checked and rechecked. i had new flashing installed. i did everything i could to stop the leak and nothing was working. one day during a hard rain i went upstairs to the bedroom to watch. the only thing i could see that was happening was that water was splashing up on the window in that bedroom. i went back downstairs, grabbed some aluminum foil, and took it back upstairs and lined the bottom of the window. i left it there until the next rain .... no leak.

the water had found a "path" from that window .... down along some of the structure beams .... onto my kitchen ceiling. the actual leak and the window upstairs was probably 5 feet apart ... so don't think in terms of leaks being straight down.

i used some silicone caulk on the inside of the window opening at the bottom. i also installed a piece of gutter to move the water past that particular window to a lower gutter.

my kitchen ceiling stayed dry

I'd get a tube of roofing cement , and a tube of silicon that fit in a caulking gun. The silicon is used where the flashing meets the siding, and the roffing cement is used where the shingles meet the flashing. If you get up there and look it over closely you'll probably see where the leak is originating from.

We have a leak in our dining room ceiling. It has leaked twice in the past year and only when it rains really heavy. We think it is coming from a dormer that is on the roof. We have a covered front porch right in front of where the dining room is. We thought maybe the water was running over gutter and inside porch and then into ceiling but now we think it is coming in around dormer. The house is a one and a half story and there are no leaks upstairs...just the downstairs dining room. When it rains the water runs over the front of and behind the gutter. We cleaned out the gutters and they still do this. I don't know if they are tilted too much to the front or maybe not tight enough to the eave. But anyway we think the problem is probably the dormer. When you go upstairs and walk down the dormer hall all is fine and no water is up there so it isn't leaking in up there but maybe down around the outside into the ceiling of the downstairs. We can't afford to hire a roofer or handyman so we need to do it ourselves. What do we look for when we get up there around the dormer? Will it be obvious there is a problem or do we need to put tar or something around the dormer where it joins the roof? What steps do we need to take to get the leak fixed?

Also, any suggestions on what to do to get the gutter run off to stop would be appreciated.
