heat pump question

Fire ants just love outside units. They are attracted to the humming and vibrations and will encase parts of the condenser and cause it to stop working. Happened to us once and, from what I read, it is not a rare occurrence in the south.

If it's low on freon or the filters are clogged, the unit can freeze up.

"Shea said it was making a loud noise but I never heard that, just a low hum"

It's humming because it doesn't know the words to the song.

The fan will turn off when in defrost mode

Some older model heat pumps were like that, but the newer ones do...otherwise, what's the point?

Heat pumps do not work when the outside temp is too low.

Should use backup heat source.

The fan shuts off when it goes into defrost, but the compressor still runs. Sometimes you will see steam coming out of it when it goes into defrost.

The exact same thing happened to my upstairs unit. One company told me I needed a new condenser, which is the entire outside unit. Another company told me it wasn't the condenser but the capacitor. Replaced the capacitor and it's been running like a charm.

Zombie, Sounds like a relay or a capacitor problem. If so, it should be a eazy fix.
