When our heat pump died it did the same thing. Good luck to you Jason.

It took awhile for our heat pump to take its last breath and when your heating bills start to rise you will know it is time to yell UNCLE.

Leaving it off for awhile and then turning it back on seemed to work. The house warmed up, anyway, so I know the heat is working.

I also found that if I turned the AC on, then the fan turned on, so I'm confident that nothing is wrong there.

You guys might be right about the defroster not working, but since it's already Spring then that might be a problem for future-Jason. I'll rinse it down well in the morning (no real way to do it at night), though, to finish getting the salt off.

If all else fails, I'll bring gwliar a sammich and we'll hang out under the bridge.

Thanks for the help!

Also you can turn the ac on and this will take the heat out of your house and put it to your out side coils. This will cause the ice to melt faster. But the water hose with out the pump being on is the best.

And like the other poster said rinse the thing good since you put salt on it. ( dont ever do that again) Or no more heat pump.

Normally it will go into a defrost mode and make a lot of noise. The ice builds up and the blades reverse to knock the ice off. It goes thru a defrost mode every hour or two. Normal operations.call the installer or BRG.

Jason, your heat pump has failed in the defrost mode. You can take a water hose and run the water across the ice until it melts. Once it melts you can start it back up. The loud noise you hear when it sounds about like some thing quinching (sp) is the defrost comming on.

If it does this again call a repair man, It is either the defrost board gone bad or low on freon.

Good luck. I got a nice far going under the bridge if you and Millisa gets to cold.

Rinse well to get the salt off. Components do not like salt as it will cause corrosion

It may be going into defrost mode, when it does that the fan won't turn (some models) and it'll sound rough. You should see steam rising.

If that fails, do what BRG said...or get WXII involved.

Everything I've seen online says to turn it off to allow the cords/coils to cool off...then do the warm water thaw. Nothing sharp to get the ice off...then once it is deiced, turn it back on.

BRG, you are out of practice. Three lines bud!

Have you tried praying?

Don't do what my husband did and take a drill to the ice. We had to replace the heat pump.

Basically there is a part that needs to be replaced which will prevent the ice from forming.

Mine steamed too. And made the horrible noise. My fan was running. I have to do this everytime we have ice.

The steam is what's scaring me. I don't know if I should leave it on and let it burn off the ice or water itself, or if I'm burning out a piece of hardware.

And should the fan be coming on?

You have to pour hot water inside to melt the ice. I just had to do it to mine also.

I'm hoping you guys can give me some advice here.

I have a heat pump. A few hours ago, it was making a lot of noise, and then suddenly there was a big "crunch" and the noise stopped. I turned it off and went outside to check it out. I found that ice had accumulated around the fan blades, and it looked like the blades were hitting the ice and gotten stuck.

I chipped off the ice the best that I could, and then poured salt on the remaining ice.

I waited about an hour, then turned it back on. I hear the compressor kick on, but the fan blades don't spin at all (I can use a stick and make them spin freely, either direction). It starts steaming like crazy, though.

What I don't know is whether the steam is normal because there's ice and water inside of it, or whether the blades should be trying to turn at all. Or, did the blades getting stuck cause something to burn out?
