Growing Dahlias

I'm going to grow a bunch of dahlias and was wondering if you can grow them in pure compost? It looks like good, rich black dirt that I have shoveled on top of the regular clay dirt. Do I need to mix the compost in or can I just plant the dahlias in the compost?
