There are now Stain Strip products that are effective on both oil based and water based stains and will give you alternatives to the coat year after year method Hydro Pressure Service 400 9159.

Well good luck with your project, hope it turns out well. If you can turn your decking boards over, pressure wash after you do and that will give you a fresh start to do what you want.

You need to use a penetrating oil stain if you do not want it to peel. Most of the acrylic stains will peel just like paint. If most of the stain you already have on there is peeling you could try a pressure washer but that will only work if it is already peeling. Otherwise you will need a chemical stripper.

I made the mistake several years ago of staining my back deck reddish color. I like the color, but it peels off every year in spots and looks horrible. I used stain in the first place because I thought stain was permanent and didn't peel like paint, but this stuff peels just like paint. I would like to start over and go back to the plain wood and then use a stain that will not peel off. What are my best options to get this stuff off and what should I use to restain so that it will not peel like paint?
