It's hard to start tomatoes from seeds. Most people plant them too deep. You can get sprouts by folding the seeds up in a moist paper towel, and setting it in a sunny window for a few days. Tomato seeds are very small. Wear glasses when you do this, if you have lousy eyesight like I do.

Is there anywhere you can buy tomato plants at this time? My sun room is a wall of windows (south facing) and I would love to get a jumpstart on tomatoes. I have never had any success with seeds. I must be doing something wrong.

If you are anxious build a hoop house or a cold frame ( I lean old windows on the south side of my house) and set them in there. Ventilate it if it gets into the 70's and close it off at night. Add some black jugs of water for a heat sink. You can buy gadgets to ventilate automaticly than use temperature to open and close a window that work great. If a deep freeze is forecasted then put blankets on your coverings or there are heat tapes made to go in the soil that have built in thermostats that run on 120 volts that really help promote growth and provide frost protection. My inside plants did so well got to tell you what I did. When I cooked vegetables in the vegetable steamer, I would save the water below, cool it and dilute it with more water, then water my plants with it. Also when I boil eggs I save the water, cool it and dilute it for the plants. They love it and it makes them thrive. At times I save the water in a quart jar, put it in the frig called 'pot liquor' and add it to my soup. Nothing with nourishment is ever poured down the sink!

That's what I'm thinking, Quack. I don't want anything ruined by frost. I'm trying to get plants started...some inside and what I can plant outside I will, but I just want to be careful.

With all the warm weather, I've been wondering. What's ok to start outside now? I've started my tomatoes inside, but with the fear of frost yet, what can I start out in the garden without it getting hurt by frost?
