Yes, you need to cover them if you don't want to loose you bloom. I always plant pansies in the fall. They love the cold and will last all winter. The hate heat but love the cold. You do need to dead head them often to keep them blooming. And no you don't need to dig up the mum. They are perennial and will come back. You may not want to buy the floral mums though. They are not as clod hardy.

Save them as long as you can because mums and panseys are beautiful little flowers.

Yes you do unless you want the blooms to turn brown and ugly.... Yes, winter will eventually make them ugly but will not kill them..

i wouldn't winter is bound to kill them anyway...probably. you should go dig them up and keep them inside till spring
