This issue is why so many people work all year long on their compost heaps. The average family will produce around 1500 lbs of compost per year according to most estimations. More or less depending on amount of yard waste, number in family etc. With work, time and some common sense you can possibly never have this problem to begin with.

And tell them you want to see at least 35 cubic yards of dirt on the tandem:
(4) A truck or other motor vehicle shall be exempt from such light‑traffic road limitations provided for pursuant to G.S. 20‑118(b)(4), when transporting supplies, material or equipment necessary to carry out a farming operation engaged in the production of meats and agricultural crops

Yes the same amount of the good Miracle Grow topsoil will cost you around $110. I say buy the cheap stuff and stop on the way home at a cow pasture and "borrow" the fertilizer.

Find some people with horses. You might find some willing to let you clean out some barn stalls and leave with the spoils. Or you can have topsoil delivered. Expect to pay $300-$500 per tandem truckload. You will pay either way though, either with your own labor or cold hard cash. Nothing for free.

A half ton pickup (F150) can haul approx. a cubic yard (27 cu. ft.) of topsoil weighing in at around 1 ton or 2,000 pounds. Now everyone knows this will cover a 10ft. X 10ft. area to a depth of 3 1/4 inches. How many pickup loads are we talking here.

Good topsoil dirt is still just dirt but it is valuable.
Not sure why anyone would give it free.
Now if you want some crappy red clay-dirt, you might find some for almost free.
