I always transfer plants in the fall...the sap has to be down...it is like blood to a human...the sap will bleed out and the tree might die....won't hurt to wait if you can.

You can transplant now but since it has leaves on it you may not have the success you would have if it was dormant. A previous poster was right - try to get as much of the root system as possible. It also would help to prune the top back a little so the smaller root system can handle a smaller tree. Put mulch around the plant and make sure to water it if it starts to turn dry.

Now is a fine time to transplant IMO. Dig a big rootball, get as many of the roots and as much of the tap root as possible and be sure they're watered frequently through the summer.

If you check the almanac and pick one of the very best days for transplanting and then go the extra mile to make sure you do everything right from digging a big enough hole to keeping it properly watered, fertilized, etc. then it is doable to dig them up at this time of year and have them live and flourish. The fall is the best time of year, but, sometimes you just can't wait!

I'm a firm believer in using the advice the old almanac gives when it comes to gardening, but, it also takes some real dedication on the part of the gardener to help trees and plants along when conditions are not ideal.

i would wait till fall.i have never had any luck transplanting anything at this time of year.it might just be me though.good luck.

Our neighbor has given us some dogwood trees. we will have to dig them up and was wondering is now a good time to do this? the trees are about 3-4 ft. tall.
