I plant impatiens in pots all around my trees and they are beautiful up until frost. The need very little care and not much watering if mostly shade. They brighten up a shady spot with color all season long. You really cannot go wrong with them.

HOSTAS!!!! They do well in shade or sun!!!! I have a very shadey yard so there are a lot of 'forest' type plants that I never even knew existed. I have tons of Hostas & would be more than willing to give you a good price just to have them thinned out!!! In the summer they will reward you with a beautiful stalk of light violet flowers. Anyone else interested in HOSTAS, please let me know, they're quite mature & I'll let them go for $3 each.

You have a big container? Try coleus in the middle, with begonias around the sides. Coleus have these big, red, leafy petals, so they take up a lot of room, but they can get tall. Begonias come in a bunch of sizes, but some of them are shorter so they look good against the big leaves.
If I were you, I'd get some green vines to plant in there, too, and let them hang over the sides. If it doesn't flower, then it's probably going to be fine in the shade.

I have a very shady area, underneath a bunch of pine trees, and a great big container. I'm thinking of using that container to put a bunch of plants in, and sitting it in that shady area.
Can you guys suggest some plants that might do well in a shady area, and in a container? Flowers, bushes, small trees, I'm open to anything! I'd love for it to be colorful year-round, but I'm OK with it just being spring-fall.
