* Can we edit these posts?

* I didn't mean to say you'd need to jack it up & change the foundation. That's the worst case scenario. In my opinion someone who knows what he's doing can carefully dig it out & make the supports right as he goes. It won't need jacked up. That was just an example to those who said it couldn't ever / never be done. It can.

I think the only way it could LEGALLY be done is to have an engineer draw up plans for it. Second choice would be to have a person do it who is competent in engineering work & with the soil in your area.

Houses can be jacked up & moved so it isn't impossible to jack one up & change the foundation supports under it. That's what I'm thinking may need done. But you'd need a competent person to inspect the house & advise you. In some cases new footers may need poured & new support columns installed. Its not rocket science but should be done carefully, methodically & right.

I don't know how you'd judge a person's competence apart from an engineering degree except by previous successful work & good references on similar structural / foundation modification work.

I have an elderly neighbor whose brick ranch home was built in the early 1950's. She had her basement dug out in either the late 1970's or early 1980's & has never had any issues with it at all. If you decide to do this, please make sure you get someone who really knows what they're doing!!

I agree do not do this under any circumstances.

I have done itm but unless the contractor that does it is well experienced at doing it, I would recommend adding on. Digging can cause structural problems real quick if one does not know what he is doing.

Well darn, maybe a detached garage would be a better option.

Less expensive and structurally better to just add on.

We have little to no storage in our home and have began discussing the possibility of digging out our basement. Currently, it is dugout enough to stand under the house and it has a dirt floor. We would like to dig it out more and have it poured. Has anyone done this and if so, is it worth the expense?
