MSA, fyi, the entire season of True Blood will be playing on HBO on New Year's Eve...so if ya know anyone with HBO, maybe you can get them to tivo it or record it or something like that!
In the show, Bill kills the vampire Longshadow, not Eric. And they make it where Bill goes to New Orleans to vampire court, where he gets sentenced to turning the teenage girl. That's basically where season 1 ends. I remember that at the end of the first book, we learn that Bill becomes involved in vampire politics....so yes, very different from the series.
While I find the differences annoying, I still really enjoy the show. But like you, I'm WAY more drawn to Eric than I am Bill. I don't know if the show will develop a relationship with Eric and Sookie or not...but I can see a little groundwork has been laid for that. Sookie is definitely drawn to Eric, I think. And Eric is much more appealing...even Sookie can see that, I think!
So far in the series there have been no weres...the only other mystical beings we are introduced to in the first season are the witch lady (but they haven't done much with her yet) and Sam Merlotte.
I think I'll go back and re-read the first 2 books too. And I'm just going to buy the other books, no matter what. I'll want to keep them.
I hope you can get them on netflix. If I see a marathon on HBO I will set my dvr to record and maybe we can have a True Blood show marathon at my house! ;-)
Are you talking about Longshadow, the bartender that was stealing money from Eric? In the book, Eric killed Longshadow by staking him in the back and its not until a couple of books later that we learn the price he had to pay for killing him. Evidently when a vampire kills a vampire, compensation must be paid to the dead vampire's sire. Just a hint on the books, Fangtasia bartenders don't tend to last very long for one reason or another.
This girl puts a totally new spin on everything. Sookie and Bill have enough trouble keeping their relationship going without this girl adding to it. Although, knowing now what I know about Bill, it's kind of hard to root for him. Eric can be a jerk and a manipulator at times, but at least he's honest about it, so I just have to pull for Eric.
Yeah, that's witch I'm talking about but I don't recall Tara being involved with her. Okay, I've definately got to watch the show so I can keep up with all the changes. I get Netflix, so maybe they will have it. They have lots of TV series.
Bill and Sookie's first time, that I have to see. It was very well written in the book (but not as good as Sookie and Eric's first time). As for the nudity, that doesn't bother me (as long as the kids aren't trying to look over my shoulder while I watch it) but thanks for the warning. I will definately look it up.
Have they introduced the weres from Hot Shot or New Orleans yet? Being involved in the supernatural brings a whole new group of people into Sookie's life. Some of them are good additions but some of them she could do without.
I started re-reading the series yesterday just to make sure I remembered all the details. I got half way through the first book. They're just as good as a re-read.
I'm glad to hear that Lafayette plays a larger role in the books. I loved his character and I was sad when I got all the way through the first book with barely a mention.
Hollywood video rents TV series. Once it comes out on video I bet you can rent it from them. Or maybe even netflix. But I don't use netflix so I don't know.
I love Eric and Pam!
At the end of the season on HBO, they had it so that Bill had to "pay" a price for killing the vampire (the one that tried to kill Sookie at Eric's club). They were either going to bury him for hundreds of years or he had to turn someone. They caught some annoying teenage girl and he was forced to turn her. She was so annoying that Bill begged Eric to take her off his hands, which he did. But at the end of the last episode, Eric and Pam show up at Bill's house and drop her back off. Eric said he couldn't handle her. So Bill is stuck with this girl, with his and Sookie's relationship supposedly about to rekindle.
Lots of stuff different between series and books! In the series, Tara gets involved with the witch that I think you're talking about ...the book calls her a maenad I think. So far she hasn't interacted with Bill, Sookie, or Eric and Pam at all. I can't wait to read about Eric losing his memory!
I'm really looking forward to the next season on HBO. I'm also really excited to get my hands on the rest of the books! I'll check the library first of next week.
One of the best scenes in the entire season was when Bill and Sookie slept together the first time...right after her grandmother's funeral. Check that out on youtube. There is some nudity, just a warning, but my my my it was quite a scene!
I watched a couple of the youtube clips. You're right, Eric is great. He's not quite what I had pictured in my head (he's better). Pam is very close to how I had her pictured. I'm starting to wish I had HBO.
Thanks, I'll check out youtube. Eric and Pam are awesome in the books. Yeah, the books kill off Lafayette but I was thinking it was in a later book. It was this whole big thing about him being black and h*mosexual in the book and Sookie discovers sex parties. I can't remember what book that was in. I'll have to go back and refresh my memory. Almost the entire book focuses on Lafayette's murder and who did it and why. He played a bigger role in death than in life but no, he's not turned. As for Tara, she gets herself deep into vampire culture when she starts dating a vampire and Sookie has to call in a favor from Eric to get her out of trouble. A teenager? Was the teenager a were? There's one book in which a vampire (can't remember which one) actually does what they think is impossible and turns a were into a vampire but I don't think they're in Bon Temps when it happens. I think it takes place in New Orleans, several of the books go out of town or even out of state. But that's quite a few books in the future.
Question I can't help but ask. In the show, has Eric lost his memory due to a witch's spell? If not, I won't go into detail, but that book has to be my favorite. You get to see an entirely different side to Eric. It's great.
MSA, the actor who plays Eric is positively delicious!! He steals every scene he is in (just like in the books, imo). I don't know his name. You can find clips on youtube or even on HBO's website for the show. I didn't realize Tara came in later...but I thought they killed Lafayette...does he become a vampire? The first season ends with Lafayette being killed and them finding him in the car. I do know that Bill turns out to be a jerk and they break up in later books. In the show Jason doesn't have as many redeemable qualities as he does in the books so far. In the books, does Bill turn a bratty teenager into a vampire? He had to in the show, and that part of it didn't set right with me.
Tara and Lafayette both have bigger roles in the later books but I don't want to give away the books by going into detail. I got most of my books from Amazon.com but if I just couldn't wait for the next book, the Wilkes library has some of them. If I'm remembering correctly, I checked out the 3rd and 4th books from there. Like I said, I've only watched a couple of the shows. I don't get HBO and the two I saw were during a Directv "free" weekend so I don't really know all the ends and outs of the show. Jason reminds me of a hormonal teenager. One moment he acts like the grown up he is and the next he's chasing the first skirt that walks by and acting like a jerk. But he does have his moments so most of the time you don't hate him, you just want to smack some sense into him. Believe it or not, Bill becomes the ex-vampire boyfriend later on and Sookie finds out something that really makes her hate him (several books away). It's just one more twist in the crazy life of Sookie. Has the show introduced Eric yet? If so, who plays him. I'm curious if the actor resembles the book description. They did a great job casting Sookie and Bill, so I hope they continue with good picks for Eric and Pam. Pam has to be my favorite vampire.
I also agree that books are almost always better, but I have to tip my hat to HBO on a few things. First of all, the addition of Tara as a character to HBO series was a fantastic move. She is a very compelling character and the actress just blows me away! I also think it was smart of HBO to make Lafayette play a larger role in the first season. He was barely mentioned in the book...and he became one of my favorite characters on the show.
Some of the story lines in the show have perplexed me, like the Jason/Amy thing and them kidnapping a vampire, etc. Also, Jason is a heck of a lot more likable in the books than he is on the show.
I am glad HBO didn't have the Elvis thing come into the show. Of all the reading I've done in the books, that was the only thing that I thought was kinda stupid.
I've only read the first 2...I am trying to find them used but I've not had any luck with the rest of the series yet.
I love the series. I either have, or have read, all of them. I've only watched a couple of the HBO shows, but from what I've seen, the books are WAY better. But then again, I've never seen a movie or show that have been better than the books. From what I understand, each season of True Blood covers one book. I think that's why HBO has added or deleted so much, to make sure they could stretch a book out for an entire season. Until True Blook came out, it seems no one had ever heard of Sookie Stackhouse except me. I haven't had anyone I could talk to about the books either. I discovered the books about 1 1/2 years ago and I was addicted after the first one. Anybody that wants to talk about the books, I'll be glad to discuss them with you. Also, does anyone read the Stephanie Plum series? That's another excellant series that no one around here seems to read.
I'm reading them...I love the show and started reading the books as a result. The books are great...I really enjoy them. They are, however, different. The show True Blood stays true to many things in the books, but there are many things that HBO has changed outright, added, deleted, etc. from the books. The books are addictive, engaging, and quick reads. The most important thing HBO got right was Sookie's quirky character. Let me know how you enjoy them. I've been wanting someone to exchange conversations with about the books and the series!!
from charlaine harris? i just ordered a set off ebay since i was addicted to the hbo show true blood.. curious if the books are just or even more interesting?
