If you do read a Stephan King novel one of the very best his Firestarter. The book was sooo much better than the movie. There are other good books out there but a lot are vampire and werewolf and demons. But there are a few good authors. Keeley Armstrong is really good Bitten, Stolen are a couple of her books in the werewolf series. you might want to look at her website she also post some novellas that you can read on line for free. it's www.keeleyarmstrong.com
She also has some witch books out i believe one of the first was Dime Store Magic. Wal-mart did have some of these at one time.

I haven't seen one at walmart, but check Browse About or the library for Sharyn McCrumb, particularly Rosewood Casket and She Walks These Hills. These are ghost stories about folks from Appalachia, but they are neither scary, nor gory. Rich in plot and character.

What are some good books that i can get at wal-mart that isn't gory? I want something to read while winding down. I love stories that have to do with ghosts. But i'm not so into reading that i know authors and such. Just like to have something different.

Okay, I was way wrong about Phil Rickman, he has quite a few more that I intend to seek out. He is just not as well known (as far as I know) around here.

I read Interview With a Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, and part of Queen of the ****ed. I liked the first couple but got bored by #3. She's a bit kinky for my taste in her witch books, not scary at all. I did read Servant of the Bones. That was pretty good, but there again, TMI re: the sex scenes.
I started the Dark Tower series by S. King, but can't get into it so much. Eyes of the Dragon is a good book by him. It's also shorter for people like me who tend to lose patience with his penchant for tedious discription of absolutely everything.
Phil Rickman is a good one. He only has about three that I know of, Curfew, December, and Candlenight. Read Curfew, working on Candlenight and haven't got to December yet. He is really creepy with his stories set in Wales and centering around ancient rituals and folklore, but set in present day.
R.L. Stein wrote one adult novel that I know of called Superstitious, good also, but a bit gory for my taste.

I'l probably be lynched by all the Stephen King fans, but I've tried to read a few of his novels and wasn't very impressed. They seemed a little sophomoric after a few pages. But I'm with you on romances, tried to read 'em for the dirty parts, then got bored with that. Best thing I've read lately for giving me the 'heebies" was "Stolen Child" by Keith Donohue.

It is TOTALLY scary. Also, I found his book, "Christine" frightening as well. "Pet Cemetary" will put chills up your spine!

Thanks Granny and MsD, I was wondering where all the readers were. If the gore isn't too pervasive, I can skip over. I do that with lengthy romantic parts. I bought 1 romance novel in my youth, skimmed through to find all the dirty parts and never bought another. Had my fill. Talk about gore. Anyway, has either of you ever read Stephen King's Salem's Lot ? Seen the movie, but I heard the book was rather scary.

Thomas Harris is great for a good scare. If you are a fan of Hannibal Lector...check him out!!

Try "Something Wicked This Way Comes" by Ray Bradbury. Or some of H.P. Lovecraft's short stories. And then there is always, E.G. Poe. If you're up for a novel, try "The Historian", by Elizabeth Kostova- it's sort of a cross between Anne Rice's vampire chronicles and Dan Brown's "DaVinci Code"-suspensfull, spooky, sexy fun

Okay boys and girls, October is here and I'm ready to get my spook on. Anybody have a suggestion for a truly scary (not gory, disgusting) novel or book of short stories? You know, the phobia-inducing,make-you-look-under- the-bed and sleep with the light on (even when you're thirty something?) kind?
