Just keep watching. Everything explains itself. Personally, season 2 and 4 are my favorites, but I love all episodes.

So I'm watching the first episode and rick wakes up from a coma in the hospital. What I don't get is how he stayed alive? When he finds the black guy and his son he says the gas lines have been down for a month.

Also the flowers are dried up and dead, how did he not dehydrate and die?

The IV's wouldn't have lasted that long? Was the hospital still operational after the outbreak?
