Yes, there are several other books by the same name. Be careful that you get the correct one.

Okay, The Lamplighter by Maria S. ***ins it is!
Jason gave me some good suggestions to make our group run more smoothly and I'll work on putting those into effect soon.
For now, everyone can go ahead and get their copy of The Lamplighter. I'll do a roll call sometime next week to get a list of those reading with us and we'll go from there.
Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I'm trying to read along with you guys, even though I don't have much time to join in the discussion
I'm very interested in The Lamplighter. I've never heard of it, but if it was just as popular as The Scarlet Letter and Uncle Tom's Cabin in it's release day then I'm guessing it's more adult than what we read in school.
I'm up for The Republic, too. I just finished reading a similar book by Baldacci, though, so if it were up to me I would rather wait until next month on this one.
The Count of Monte Cristo is an excellent book, but somewhere in the neighborhood of 2000 pages! It took me 3 months to read, and I had to stop every once in awhile and read something else, then come back to it. I've read To Kill a Mockingbird, and love it, but haven't read any of the others that panigrwi mentioned so I'm open to any of them.
Also, I would suggest Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
This was required reading for Melissa when she was in college, but she loved it and handed over to me; I loved it, too! Excellent book.
Since Dumpy is the ringleader right now, though, I suggest that we stick with The Lamplighter. I just called the Library, but they don't have any copies in stock. Browse About Book Exchange probably does, but I couldn't reach them to find out.

I've never even heard of The Lamplighter. I'm up for anything, though. And I hated The Scarlet Letter, LOL. Is it hard to get? Some other suggestions I have are: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas Tortilla Curtain by Boyle Anna Karenina by Tolstoy To Kill a Mockingbird by Lee Jubilee by Walker

What happened at the meeting? I was there, asked at a few tables if they were involved with the book club, no one knew anything about it. Sat down for about 30 minutes to see if anyone walked in with a book or two, read the newspaper, then left. Hope it was a good meeting!

I'd dropped a post a few days back about Republic. It's a recently published book available thru Amazon. I've not got a lot of time for recreational reading, but between my studies, it's a great escape.
Sort of an alter reality novel, it takes place a few years ahead of now. Now, the manuscript for this book was written prior to 9/11, but was modified due to the events of that day. Many of the themes in this book are of "what can happen" with an out of control government engaging in a manner much as we are dealing with today.
I've gotten about 1/2 thru so far, and am really enjoying it. The auhor, Charles Sheehan-Miles, lives in Cary, NC, though lived in Arlington, VA (while doing research for this book) and is a friend of a friend of mine.
He's writing a new book due to be released in early 2008, P@triot. I've had the opportunity to read tid bits and it also looks to be quite engaging.

Hi everyone, I've laid East of Eden to rest so we are open for discussion on a new book to read. Any ideas?
I have recently acquired a copy of The Lamplighter by Maria S. ***ins. First published in 1850, The Lamplighter outsold The Scarlet Letter ten to one and was second only in sales to Uncle Tom's Cabin. This book was a huge and immediate success - selling 40,000 copies in a few weeks and 70,000 in a year.
This book is only 96 pages in the old type (double column) so it would be a quick read for many of us. I am open to other suggestions though!
