Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth Series is EXCELLENT!! They have made a tv series out of the first one and its airing Nov 1st, though I have my doubts about it being anywhere near as good as the books. But the series is a definite must read!!

Tolkien was wonderful! His books provided the foundation for most fantasy novels that have been written since. Sigh.

According to the Robert Jordan blog (http://www.dragonmount.com/...) , the Wheel of Time series will be ended by another author, Brandon Sanderson, and will be published in Fall 2009. Sigh.

I love Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. I was crushed to learn he passed away in September. Apparently, he told his wife and publisher the plot line for the next and final book of the series, so I am sure they'll publish it, but it just won't be the same. If you've ever read Jordan, you'll know that there are so many hints, innuendos, and loose ends that no one other than Jordan could ever wrap them up. I sometimes wondered if he would be able to, but now I'll never know.

Stephen R. Donaldson wrote the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. They are great. Actually, my favorite of his is Mordant's Need (Mirror of Her Dreams & A Man Rides Through).

My favorite author is Lloyd Alexander (who unfortunately passed away earlier this year). Read The Prydain Chronicles and (my fav) The Westmark Trilogy.

I've been reading a lot of Elizabeth Moon lately. She writes great SF.

And, of course, anything with dragons in them...lol.

I have a nice collection of the Piers Anthony Xanth novels. If you start at the beginning, they're a lot of fun to read, but there have to be 50 of them in the series by now.

I have to admit, the author doesn't spend as much time in making every little detail fit as he should (meaning, a "rule" in one book might be ignored in another), but they're still fun.

I once read a series of books, can't remember the name, but it was something to do with "The Thomas Covenant Series". There were several books in the series, and they were so real that you felt like you were part of the story. You knew all the characters. When they hurt, you hurt. When they were cold, you were cold. GREAT read! I wish I could remember the name!

Another one, "Bio of a Space Tyrant" by Piers Anthony. There are five or six books in this series, and you won't be able to put it down. Piers Anthony's "Incarnations of Immortality" series is great too.
When I decided to reply to this thread, I was going to recommend the Dragonlance books by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman (there are other sci-fi writers in that group, but none as good as these two), but someone beat me to the punch on that one.
Later!

Recommended Readings:

George R.R Martins - Game of Thrones Series (Game of Thrones, Song of Ice and Fire, Feast for Crows) - Series not finished yet but its incredible.

Robert Jordan - Wheel of Time series - though this series may never end and has grown tiresome - the first 3 or so books were really good

Dennis McKiernan - Uses the Lord of the Rings for some his ideas but adds a fresh story and characters...very good reading

Steven Brust - Vlad Taltos series - Very dark humor - very clever if you like mob type stuff set in a fantasy world (Jhereg, Orca, Phoenix, Teckla, several others) - Favorite fantasy author probably

I do! I learned to read by Terry Brooks "The Sword of Shanarra" series. My mom threw the TV out the door literally when my older siblings failed reading. She read halfway through the book aloud and then handed them their own copy to finish. I was almost in kindergarten and cried and said, "But I don't know how to read." She taught me that summer and I have been reading sci-fi ever since! I love the Terry Goodkind books...they are wonderful!

Salvatore readers, what's your favorite or where's a good place to start if you've never read him before?

I love Salvatore too. Aren't there RPG's based on some of his books? Does anyone on here get involved in that sort of thing?

I can't pass them on yet, I've got my Dad in line behind me to read them!

You asked what some good fantasy authors are: my favorite, and one of the best of the fantasy genre's is R.A. Salvatore. Any book in most of his (many) series can stand alone, you don't have to read the ones before to love them. This author's books literally hold me spellbound until I'm done. If you love Lord of the Rings type things with dwarfs, elves, magicians and bad guys galore, you'll love this guy's stuff. His intellect is very stimulating, some of the "reflections" that his characters are thinking of are so thought provoking I've written them in my daughter's journals for when they're older!

Me! Me! Me! I'm really into fantasy more than sci fi...but I LOVE the fantasy genre. Can you recommend some great books? I'm always looking for more.
