I don't own one either, but have a friend who does. She hasn't had too many issues with it. I don't know all the details but a few months ago there were a couple of books that just vanished. AFTER she'd paid for them. I think it was some sort of issue with Amazon at the time.
Personally I just like real books.

I don't own one, but I've heard the biggest negative is that the books you "buy" for your Kindle will ONLY work with Kindle. If you ever lose your device, or Amazon quits supporting the devices, you lose your entire library.

IF, for instance, you see the "Nook" at Barnes & Noble (their Reader) and like it better, or one of the Sony Readers at Staples or Best Buy, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO READ YOUR BOOKS ON THE NEW DEVICE!

Definitely something to consider. As for me, I'll be hanging on to my BOOKS! If your Mom loves to read, how about a Barnes & Noble gift certificate (or insert your favorite bookstore). Just a thought.
