In his eighteen years on the force, Edward Dieter had not seen anything quite this gruesome.

In the distance, the wailing of multiple sirens broke the morning calm. The cold November air made it difficult for Edward to
work. Age was catching up with him, and the cold reminded him of this every chance it could. He could almost feel the wrinkles furrowing deeper as he stood there. His aching hands stiffened as he checked the female victim over for injuries. Reaching around her abdomen, he felt something odd, c*cking his head aside between the two victims, he spotted the knife. From his left breast pocket, he pulled a white handkerchief and picked up the bloodied weapon and set it aside. Softly he heard her mumble something inaudible. "Miss? What's your name? Can you tell me who did this to you? What happened?" She stared far away, and said nothing further... laying seemingly catatonic.

Looking up the embankment, Edward could see the red strobelights flashed off the hillside, rounding the curve. A patrol car had also pulled up along side. The paramedic made visual contact with the deputy below and they grabbed their equipment and began their trek down the slope. Ahead of them the young patrolman swung down the slope with ease.

"Hey, Furley," Sgt Dieter addressed the patrolman. "We seem to have two victims here, one deceased male, the female amazingly seems to have no outward injuries as best I can tell... I believe she's suffering from shock, and slight hypothermia. No telling what kinda h e l l they went through out here. She won't speak. I've got what I believe to be the murder weapon over here," Sgt Dieter shined his flashlight beam on the ground over to the knife.

The medics came on scene and attended to the woman.

Hayard Furley had just recently joined the police force and was still relatively green. Just twenty-four, he'd transferred to Connecticut to escape the harsh realities of inner city life in Philadelphia. Newly married, he had had everything he'd wanted until his mother had been struck in the right temple by a ricocheted bullet during a drive by. She survived the ordeal, but due to the blood loss, and slow response from rescue personnel, she suffered greatly more and had permenant brain damage. Jenny's new wife was pregnant, but carrying a burden, as she was caring for Furley's mother at home, becuase they lacked the funds to house her in a hospice.

Several hours passed and night broke to day. Rustling leaves swirled about in the chilly air, twighlight had arrived. Nadia was stirred awake.. but not by the whistling wind that carried the leaves aloft... it was the chirp of a police radio in the distance. Suddenly, it dawned on her, her plight... Franco's plight. Too late to run, the officers were coming down the bank, they surely saw her by now. She lay waiting, motionless... listening.

From atop the embankment a passerby had spotted the couple down below and had called the police. Sgt Dieter radioed in on arrival and stepped out over the guardrail, holding onto a small sapling, he allowed his feet to break with the ground down the steep slope, holding himself steady with his arm about the tree trunk. As he slid down the hill, he shifted his weight around and caught another passing tree to control his downward slide. About eighteen feet down, he came to a sudden stop with a thud. Sgt Dieter bounced forward, letting out an "umph!" He skipped forward a few steps to regain his balance and dusted himself clean. He surveyed the scene with his eyes. A seasonal brook lie ahead, paralleling the roadway above. The leaves had already dropped, but it was certain something went seriously wrong here. Broken bloodied branches, gouged out sliding footprints spoke of the ensuing struggle that had happened merely hours before.

Then, it caught his eye. Sgt Dieter, reached up to his shoulder mike and called in an ambulance request. He gingerly stepped over to the couple heaped just ahead. Steam was still rising off of the female victim, she was still alive! Unaware of her involvement, he approached and checked her vitals. "Miss... Misss! Can you hear me. You're gonna be alright. I'm Edward, and Im gonna take care of you, just hold on... stay with me.

Nadia's mind was racing! This fool had no idea that under her she held a knife tightly in her hand and in a moment's time could cut him down like a rabid dog. She realized that he truly believe they'd both been victimized. This could give her the edge she needed. She released her grip from the knife as the deputy turned her over, checking for wounds. So much blood spatter and stains covered both of them, he couldn't tell who was cut where.

"Oh my God!" Sgt Dieter exclaimed.

The crisp fall night air blew over Nadia's body as she stood there motionless and contemplating. Mist arose from her sweaty bare skin into the blackness of night, backlit by the pale moonlight. Her gaze was distant and cold as the air she breathed. Slowly her eyes closed as she twisted the knife in her bloodied right hand. From below, a cackling and raspy gasp uttered aloud, "Help. hhh-e-elp."

Nadia's eyes opened again, and transfixed on the farthest point in space ahead of her. Brow furrowed, and her head sunk down, eyes never changing gaze, Nadia's teeth clenched.

"Shut up, you worthless piece of..." a sudden kick from her boot met Franco squarely in the throat with a loud slap. Writhing in pain, but unable to utter a sound, Franco's last moments were before him. She stepped down and twisted her heel into his neck applying pressure on his throat until it snapped, giving inward. Franco's bulging eyes streamed tears down his bloodsoaked face. His chest heaved, stomach drawn in, trying to draw a breath. The rope cut deeply into his hands, as he tried to free them from behind his back.

Nadia let out a primal scream as she thrust down atop of Franco, wielding her knife deeply into his chest with a grinding twist. "You wanna breahe, then breathe!," she scoffed at him in a dark hoarse tone as she continued to plunge the knife in again and again... and again into him. The bed of dried, dead oak leaves were now becoming soaked in a deep crimson in the melee. Having become fatigued from her fit of rage, she just slumped down next to him, hyperventilating. Nadia trembled as she lay draped halfway across her slain husband.
