Letterman had the late show on NBC in the 80's. Was on after Johnny. He was supposed to get the keys to the castle, but NBC screwed him because they thought Jay was more acceptable by average America. Dave had been doing Stupid Pet Tricks and other "crazy" things that wouldn't fit the tonight show at the time.
I'm pretty sure he never did day time. CBS stole him when NBC passed the crown to Leno.

I wish it was.
I remember once seeing Johnny do Dave's show when both were still on NBC. Johnny walked out carrying a big piece of cardboard. He sat down and unfolded it into his own desk. The joke was he couldn't do an interview without being behind a desk. He sat behind his cardboard desk the whole time. They always said he picked Dave as his replacement. I think he had a problem with Leno taking his show
